Steven Carman captured my heart with this story, and I know my dad [famed author Matt Christopher] would have said the same thing. The excitement, mystery, family sensitivity and issues put it over the top. Tremendous!”

Praise & Reviews

“Steve Carman has written a baseball book that covers all the bases. Like the best of sports fiction, it ain’t just about sports, but rather about the challenges all of us face at one time or another: challenges of loss, of embarrassment, of rage and of love. You’re gonna love Sully . . . and his posse.”

Chris Crutcher – Chris is an author of several critically acclaimed sports-themed novels, including DEADLINE, WHALE TALK, and IRONMAN. He received the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association in 2000 for his lifetime contribution in writing for teens.

Steven Carman has written a moving novel about a young man dealing with adversity both on and off the field.  Young readers may start because they care about the baseball, but they will finish because they care about the people."

Carl Deuker – Carl is an award-winning young adult sports novelist. He is the author of ON THE DEVIL'S COURT, HEART OF A CHAMPION, PAINTING THE BLACK, HIGH HEAT, RUNNER, GYM CANDY, and many more highly regarded coming-of-age novels.

Mick Cochrane

author of THE GIRL WHO THREW BUTTERFLIES, a Booklist Top 10 Sports Book for Youth.

"Southpaw Sully is irresistible. It’s funny, smart, and ultimately wise—about baseball and about life. It’s a story about loss and grief, but also about grit and resilience, about healing and redemption, about the power of love and friendship and family to sustain us. I loved every minute I spent with Sully and his teammates and cheer Steven Carman for the gift of this big-hearted book."
